The inception of this book came in 1925. Upon reading The Religion of the People of Israel, by the late Dr. Rudolf Kittel, of the University of Leipzig, the influence of the Canaanite civilization upon the development of Old Testament Religion presented itself to the author as a subject needing and inviting investigation.
The treatment of the Old Testament Religion here presented is genetic in nature and dramatic in method. The growth of the religion is traced down to the end of the Babylonian exile, by which time its major concepts had been expressed. The evolution of the religion is interpreted as the unfolding of a drama.
